October 12, 2011

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Kelly Kuhn scored the game-winning goal less than four minutes into the second half Tuesday to lift visiting Nazareth to a 1-0 victory over 25th-ranked Rochester in a non-conference women's soccer game. Sophomore Abbie Carey tallied six saves -- all in the second half -- to preserve the Golden Flyers' lead.

Following the victory, Nazareth improves to 4-2-3 overall. The Yellowjackets drop to 6-3 overall following the loss. In the previous 10 meetings, Rochester has held a 7-0-3 record against the Golden Flyers. Tuesday evening's game marked Nazareth's first win over the Yellowjackets since Oct. 31, 2001. Rochester currently has a 11-5-3 series advantage over the Golden Flyers.

Senior Kerry Gannon set up Kuhn's goal and was credited with an assist. Off a free kick opportunity from about 25 yards away from the net, Gannon's line-drive shot was saved, but Kuhn slid the rebound into the open net. The free kick opportunity was set up following a handball outside the area on the right wing.

Nazareth's stingy defense allowed the Yellowjackets just one shot in the first 49 minutes. After Kuhn's team-leading fourth goal of the season, the Golden Flyers' faced a barrage of shots from Rochester. The Yellowjackets finished with 15 shots, including six on goal, in the final 41 minutes of regulation. Carey made six difficult saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

With about 25 minutes to play in regulation, Carey made her first three saves in a span of about three minutes. She stopped two shots by Ellen Coleman at the left post. Moments later, Carey made a finger-tip save on Coleman's deflected header, which was ticketed for the lower left corner. Coleman came into the contest as Rochester's leading scorer with five goals and three assists.

Carey made her final three saves in the last 10:14 of regulation. After Coleman hit the crossbar, Carey palmed the rebound away from the Yellowjackets' Jayne Gavrity. Nazareth's defense also blocked two shots in the last five minutes to support Carey and maintain the Golden Flyers' edge.

The Golden Flyers finished with eight total shots, including five on goal. After Kristina McCann's shot in the 61st minute, Rochester held Nazareth without a shot for the final 29 minutes. With their slim one-goal margin, the Golden Flyers also focused defensively to secure the victory. Erica Conte finished with two shots on goal, and Cipperly and Deborah Towle had the other the Golden Flyers' shots on goal.

Bridget Lang finished with four saves for the Yellowjackets. Rochester finished with a final 16-8 advantage in total shots and a commanding 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 schedule on the road this weekend. Nazareth travels to Hartwick Saturday and Utica Sunday.
