The University of Nevada soccer team ended an overtime match with South Dakota State tied 0-0 Friday afternoon in the Jackrabbit Invitational at Fishback Soccer Park. The Wolf Pack is 5-5-7 under Dr. Melissa Price in overtime matches. This is the first overtime match for the team this season.

The tie places Nevada (1-2-1 MW) on the season, while South Dakota State sits at (1-2-2 Summit).  

“A tie on the road is a good outcome, not the one we wanted, but a result we can build on for Sunday,” head coach Dr. Price said. “We had to deal with some adversity and asked some players to play out of their natural position today and they did a great job. We hit the crossbar and the post on two of our chances. I’m confident we will turn those into goals next time.”  

The Wolf Pack had an early shot on goal, as Chrisalyn Fonte’s header attempt at the net in the 43rd minute was grabbed by Jackrabbit goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep. Lindsey Salcido got a shot on goal from a pass she received on a Katherine Davison corner kick six minutes later that was also saved. Nevada and South Dakota State entered halftime even at 0-0. The Jackrabbits had five shots on goal in the first half, while the Wolf Pack tallied three.

Each team came out of the intermission with quick opportunities on the offensive end. Nevada’s Salcido had a shot that was saved two minutes into the half, while Delaney Ratcliffe’s shot was blocked on the Jackrabbit’s ensuing possession. Nevada was awarded a corner kick with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Wolf Pack midfielder Fonte received the corner kick from Davison and nearly put the ball in the net, as the shot hit the crossbar. South Dakota State had a final attempt in the 87th minute in front of the Nevada goal with a header by Diana Potterveld, but Wolf Pack goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos came up with the stop to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Jackrabbits had 12 shots in the second period to five  for the Wolf Pack.

The initial overtime period began with two shots by South Dakota State that were unsuccessful, followed by an answer from a shot by Nevada forward Kori Disarufino that was saved.  Both teams kept each other scoreless in the first overtime period. The final period saw two shots on goal by South Dakota State and one by Nevada, with neither team breaking through with a goal. The match ended in a 0-0 tie.

Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos had a career high 11 saves.

The Wolf Pack will face South Dakota Sunday afternoon in day two of the Jackrabbit Invitational. Kick-off is 8 a.m.
