The University of Nevada soccer team closed out the regular season with a 2-1 double overtime loss to UNLV in a Governor’s Series presented by NV Energy match Friday evening at Peter Johann Field.

With the loss, Nevada falls to (5-10-4, 3-6-1 MW) on the season, while UNLV improves to (10-8-2, 5-5 MW) overall. The Wolf Pack secures the eighth seed in the Mountain West Soccer Tournament with the loss and will face the fifth seeded Utah State Aggies Monday at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M. at 3 p.m. Nevada defeated Utah State 2-0 earlier this season at home in the team’s MW opener.

The Wolf Pack is 5-6-10 under Dr. Melissa Price in overtime matches. This is the fifth overtime match for the team this season, with four ending in a draw and one in a loss.

UNLV likely claims three Governor’s Series points with the win, but Nevada would potentially have a chance to get half of those points back if the teams were to meet in next week’s conference tournament.

“We played well tonight and to walk away with the loss is tough for everyone to accept,” head coach Dr. Melissa Price said. “I’m proud of our ability to stay focused and respond to the late goal by UNLV. Kori showed great composure to score. In the end, we gave up a goal on a free kick and one late in overtime. Those are learning moments and I’m confident we will be better in those situations next time. Time to recover and prepare for the conference tournament. The post season is a whole new season and we are ready.”

The opening half of the rivalry match was close with each team recording four shots in the period. Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos came up with two saves on a pair of UNLV shots at the net. The intensity was high in the first period, as a yellow card was given out on each side in the half. The Wolf Pack attempted four corner kicks to two for the Rebels. The teams entered halftime tied 0-0.

A shot by Kori Disarufino in the 73rd minute into the upper left corner of the net was tipped away by the Rebels goalkeeper. UNLV forward Jenn Wolfe crossed in a set piece in the 80th minute that was headed into the net by Hayley Wilson for the 1-0 lead. Nevada answered back to even the match at 1-1 in the 87th minute, when Chrisalyn Fonte assisted Kori Disarufino with the equalizer to bring the score to 1-1. Disarufino’s goal gives the senior four on the year.

The match seemed to be heading towards a 1-1 ending in the second overtime period, but Wolfe managed to get off a shot in the closing minute from about 30 yards deep that went into the net for the Rebels golden goal, ending the match for the 2-1 win.
