New Mexico women fall to Cal State Fullerton
October 26, 2009
FULLERTON, Calif.—The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team battled Cal State Fullerton to a 0-0 draw in double overtime this afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Kelli Cornell set a new school record for shutouts in a season with her 11th against the Titans. New Mexico is now 11-4-3 on the season and 3-3-0 in Mountain West Conference play. The Titans are 4-8-5 on the season and 1-3-1 in Big West play.
“It was a hard fought game,” said head coach Kit Vela. “I thought we played OK in the first half and we played much better in the second half. It was a hard physical game. We are happy that the girls came out and played hard. I was happy with the effort.”
Cornell passed former Lobo keeper Kristen Winters, who had 10 shutouts in the 2002 season. Cornell now has sole possession of fifth place all-time at UNM for shutouts in a career.
Sophomore Jennifer Williams led the Lobos offensively with four shots including one on frame.
New Mexico had a chance to win in the 89th minute when Williams’ cross was redirected by sophomore Jael Fanning to the right post. The ball bounced and tip-toed in front of the goal line and was saved by Fullerton keeper Jessica Change.
The New Mexico defense held the Titans offense to only six shots in the match.
The Lobos wrap up regular season play on Saturday against UNLV at 5 p.m. MT. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
