Newby Grabs Spotlight On CC's Senior Day

October 20, 2013

On a day set aside to honor the seniors, it was a Newby who came up big for Colorado College.

Sophomore midfielder Seth Newby struck for a pair of goals, including the first game winner of his career, to fuel a 3-0 victory over Texas Lutheran University at a windy Stewart field.

“Seth is such an intelligent player,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “Even though he is small, he plays huge.

“It was a festive conclusion for the seniors who deserved the victory with their energy and passionate play.”

After several close calls during the first 30 minutes, Newby put the Tigers on the board when he chased down a through ball from senior forward Brandon Ogilvie while making a run through the center of the defense and slotted a low shot to the right of TLU goalkeeper Jonathan Michael from 10 yards out.

With only 29 seconds remaining before the half, CC doubled its lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Max Grossenbacher.

Senior midfielder Andrew Salazar started the play with a cross to the left post from 30 yards out on the right side. Junior defender Andrew Worthington headed the ball toward the right post and Grossenbacher touched it into the open net.

Newby completed the first multiple-goal game of his career in the 53rd minute when he took a pass from freshman midfielder Caden McKenzie on the right edge of the box, dribbled toward the net and scored with a low shot toward the far post.

At the other end of the pitch, sophomore Ian Horne had to make just two saves en route to his sixth clean sheet of the season.

His best stop occurred with 17:14 to play when freshman forward Alejandro Martinez made it through the Colorado College defense and took a shot from 15 yards away in the center of the box.

CC launched 21 shots, compared to only three for Texas Lutheran. The Tigers also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Michael finished with four saves for the Bulldogs.

Colorado College improved to 9-5-2 overall and 8-3-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers opened a six-point lead over TLU in the battle for third place.

Texas Lutheran, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 9-5-0 overall and 6-5-0 in league play.

“Texas Lutheran came into today’s game intent on securing third place,” Richardson said. “They played well at Dallas on Friday, and our guys were aware of that effort and up to the task.

“We’re on a bit of a roll heading into our final three conference games.”

Colorado College hits the road next week when it plays at Austin College on Friday, Oct. 25, and at Centenary College on Sunday, Oct. 27.
