October 19, 2016

PISCATAWAY, NJ – NJIT freshman Rene White tallied a goal and two assists as the Highlanders posted its seventh shutout of the season with a 4-0 road victory over Big 10 opponent Rutgers at Yurcak Field on Tuesday night.

NJIT (7-4-3) recorded its largest margin of victory this season, notching four goals. Four different Highlanders scored Tuesday, paced by White, who recorded four points in the win with a goal and two assists.

White and teammate Mamadou Guirassy, who also tallied a goal for the Highlanders, both bring their season goals total to six which is one shy of the NJIT Division I record seven held by Franco Gamero.

NJIT keeper Victor Pujades tallied his seventh shutout of the season, which is a new NJIT Division I record.

The Highlanders outshot the Scarlet Knights (0-11-2) 16-10 overall, with 13 of them being on goal to Rutgers two.

NJIT began their scoring in the first half.

In the 29th minute the Highlanders capitalized on a free kick by Rickardo Oldham that hit off the heads of Jonathan Onyeaka and White before finding the foot of Victor Kausch, which the senior buried into the back of the net.

The second half is where the Highlanders opened up the scoring.

Junior Guirassy scored NJIT's second goal of the game when he received a pass from Jack Flanagan, who was inside the left side of the box, which he finished from just inside the box.

Andy Alvarez scored the Highlanders third goal in the 81st minute off a forward pass from White that he handled and dribbled past a Scarlet Knight defender inside the box, and he placed into the back right corner of the net.

In the final two minutes of the game freshman White collected a goal of his own when he received a forward pass from Danny Cordeiro that he placed past the Rutgers keeper to the back post.

Freshman goalkeeper Victor Pujades earned his league-leading seventh shutout, making it now three matches in a row without conceding a goal with two saves while Rutgers David Greczek made nine saves.

NJIT will return to action and host ASUN Conference opponent Lipscomb on October 22 at 2pm.  The match will be played at Kean University East Campus Facility. Saturday will be NJIT's Coaches vs Cancer match that all ASUN Conference men's soccer teams are participating in this season.  Donations will be accepted at Saturday's game for cancer research.
