NJIT Men's Soccer Shuts Out Stetson, 1-0

TEANECK, NJ— Junior Mamadou Guirassy scored the only goal of the match as the Highlanders edged, visiting Stetson in ASUN Conference men’s soccer action at University Stadium on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson.

The match originally scheduled for 2pm at Kean University's East Campus Facility in Union, NJ, was moved to University Stadium at FDU due to the current field conditions.

The win for the Highlanders (5-4-2, 2-1-0 ASUN) matches the win totals from a year ago while, notching the programs second victory in the ASUN Conference.  All five of NJIT's wins this season have been by a one-goal margin, with four of which being 1-0 scores. The five one-goal wins are the most in a single season in NJIT's Division I era.

NJIT co-captain Guirassy netted his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Danny Cordeiro in the 27th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.  Cordeiro headed the ball ahead to the center of the box, where Guirassy one-timed into the lower left post. 

Guirassy's goal-scoring shot was one of 18 attempts for the match by NJIT, six of which were on goal.

Early in the second half, Guirassy put two shots on target, the first in the 50th minute, but his shot hit off the left post and in the 56th minute as the shot went wide.

In the 69th minute, off a corner kick for Stetson (3-6-2, 1-2-0 ASUN), Hatters leading scorer Luke Ferreira, headed down a ball to the lower left corner, but Ferreira’s shot went wide.

The Hatters attempted seven total shots, one on goal, which was taken by Ferreira.

NJIT goalkeeper Victor Pujades needed just one save to record his fourth shutout of the season and second in conference play.  Stetson’s Paul Ladwig stopped five Highlander shots.

NJIT will return to action on October 8 when the Highlanders travel to Jacksonville, Florida and take on defending ASUN champions North Florida at 7pm.
