No. 1 GVSU Battles to a 1-1 Tie at No. 15 Winona State

September 6, 2011

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 1 Grand Valley State women’s soccer came to a 1-1 draw against No. 15 Winona State on Friday, Sept. 2 at Verizon Wireless Stadium. The tie extends the Lakers unbeaten streak to 19 games dating back to Sept. 24, 2010.  GVSU continues its road swing at Minnesota State Mankato on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.

Despite outshooting the Warriors 12-0 in the first half, the Lakers could not find the back of the net as Warrior goalkeeper Anna Belpedio picked up four saves.

GVSU was able to get on the board in the 63rd minute thanks to a cross from seniorErin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) to freshman Charlie Socia (Portage, Mich.).  The Winona State defense seemed to have cleared the ball, but Socia pushed it just past to goal line to end the standstill.

Winona State evened the score at 74:30 when Samantha Fegen nailed a corner kick to the front of the net just in time for Melissa Sellier to head the ball into the back of the net, making it a 1-1 game.

Both teams evenly controlled overtime as GVSU took five shots to Winona State’s four.  The Lakers’ best chance came from the foot of junior Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wis.) who had her shot careen off the post in the 97th minute, while senior Megan Brown sailed a shot high before the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Junior keeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) picked up two of her saves as she stopped back-to-back shots from Sellier to open the first overtime. In all, Parise tallied four saves, while the Warriors’ Belpedio notched 10.

GVSU held the edge in shots 27-8 including an 11-5 mark in shots on goal and a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.
