CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The No. 12 Old Dominion men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Conference USA preseason favorite Charlotte on Saturday night at Transamerica Field.

Freshman Niko Klosterhalfen scored the lone goal for the Monarchs, who went into overtime for the second consecutive overtime match. Last Sunday, the Monarchs topped Hartford, 3-2, in double overtime.

ODU (4-1-1, 0-0-1 C-USA) took the lead on Klosterhalfen’s goal in the 26th minute. Junior Jesse Miralrio whipped in a cross from the right flank, which Klosterhalfen headed past the Charlotte goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.

Charlotte (2-2-2, 0-0-1 C-USA) answered in the 35th minute with a goal from Brandt Bronico to tie the score at 1-1.

The match would head into halftime deadlocked at 1-1 after an evenly-played opening segment. The 49ers held a slight 5-3 advantage in shots at the break and each team had one corner kick opportunity.

The two teams would exchange scoring chances throughout the second half and both overtime periods, but neither squad was able to net the match winner.

Charlotte outshot Old Dominion, 15-13, and had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Klosterhalfen and Ivan Militar led the Monarchs in shots with three apiece, while goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen finished with four saves in net for ODU.
