No. 15 Clayton State men edge feisty Francis Marion 1-0
MORROW, Ga. – September 24, 2011 – Each time Clayton State squares off against Francis Marion in men’s soccer, expect a tight contest. Saturday night was no exception.
The Lakers clearly dominated the game, but needed every ounce of energy and then some to knock off the visiting Patriots 1-0 in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field. The victory is the second straight for No. 15-ranked Clayton State, which improves to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in the Peach Belt.
The Lakers constantly stayed on the attack throughout. Clayton State out-shot Francis Marion 24-3, including holding the Patriots without a shot in the second half. However, the Lakers time and time again could convert when the opportunity presented itself.
That is until the 61st minute on a corner kick. Clayton State’s Janny Rivera served the kick to teammate Roger Boniface in the penalty box, who immediately dished it inside to Sukhman ball. On the touch, Bal punched in what proved to be the only goal of the contest.
Clayton State goalkeeper Bryan Garcia recorded his second shutout of the season with three saves, while his Francis Marion counterpart Nick Lucido recorded eight saves.
Clayton State plays host to North Georgia in a key PBC showdown on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Laker Field.
