No. 15 Eagles Defeat No. 1 LIU-Post, 1-0

October 24, 2013

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) scored in the 87th minute to lead the No. 15 Post University men’s soccer team over No. 1 LIU-Post, 1-0, at LaMoy Field on Wednesday afternoon. It is the first time any team at Post has defeated the top-ranked team in the country.

Baccielo received the ball at midfield with two defenders in front of him. He dribbled by one Pioneers defender and kicked it passed the other. The senior got the ball on the other side and launched it to the lower right side just past Pioneers goalkeeper Marco Jorgensen for game-winning score.

Both teams battled all game and the shot totals were 16-14 in favor of the Eagles. LIU-Post (14-1) had two chances midway through the opening half, but senior Andre Lindsay (Clarendon, Jamaica) stopped both attempts.

Sophomore Francisco Sastre (Sao Paolo, Brazil) nearly put the Eagles (12-1-1) ahead in the 67th minute with a diving header off a long pass from senior Jean Louis Cadet (Sunrise, Fla.) that went just wide.

Lindsay came up big in the second-half with six of his season-high eight saves en route to his eighth shutout of the year. His biggest stop came in the 81st minute as the nation’s leading scorer, Eivind Austboe, took a shot to the left side of the goal. Lindsay dove far to the left side and knocked it away.

Post has now defeated two top-10 teams this season as it opened the year with a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Southern New Hampshire. The Eagles boast the third-ranked defense in the country. It was the first time the Pioneers’ top-ranked offense has been shutout in the regular season since 2011.

The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going against Bloomfield on Tuesday, Oct. 29 in their home finale. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
