October 17, 2015

MIAMI -- The ninth-ranked Old Dominion men’s soccer team suffered its first Conference USA loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to FIU, 2-1, at the FIU Soccer Stadium.

ODU (7-2-1, 3-1-1 C-USA), who had not lost since the season opener to Coastal Carolina, also had its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped.

The Monarchs went ahead in the 59th minute on a goal from senior defender David Macsicza. Off of a set piece from 40 yards out, Ivan Militar sent in a long ball into the box that Macsicza flicked on with a header past the FIU keeper. Macsicza, who was scoreless through the first seven games of the season, has now scored in two consecutive games.

FIU (8-4-0, 3-2-0 C-USA) answered in the 73rd minute when Daniel Gonzalez ran onto a low cross from Jamar Campion-Hinds and finished with a header in the top left corner.

Patrick Lopez then netted the game-winner for the Panthers, heading in a cross from Deshawon Nembhard.

Despite the three-goal total, the teams played a scoreless first half. The Monarchs outshot FIU, 5-3, an evenly-played opening segment.

ODU outshot the Panthers, 15-12. Niko Klosterhalfen led the team with four shots, while Ryan Condotta added three. The Monarchs also held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. In net, Alex Tiesenhausen tallied five saves.
