No. 19 CSUB Records Fifth Straight Shutout To Defeat Sac State 4-0

October 15, 2011

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—No. 19 CSU Bakersfield (8-0-4, 4-0 MPSF) recorded its fifth consecutive shutout as the Roadrunners defeated Sacramento State (6-5-1, 2-2 MPSF) 4-0 Friday night at CSUB’s Main Soccer Field. CSUB has not allowed a goal in 531 minutes dating back to Sept. 25 against Oregon State.

CSU Bakersfield scored two goals in a 36 second span to take the lead. Kory Kindle (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS) posted his third tally of the year at 26:59. Ernesto Hinojosa (Jr., Tustin, Calif., Tustin HS) was awarded a penalty kick, which he converted at 27:35. Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS) recorded his 14th goal of the year in the 40th minute to give the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime. Kindle and Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) earned the assists on the play. For Sanchez, it was his second of the match.

Andrew Devlin (Fr., Derry City, Northern Ireland, North West Regional College) earned his first career goal with six seconds remaining in the match to make it the final of 4-0. Eric Shannon (Jr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) made three saves on his way to his sixth shutout of the season.

“We got a goal at the end and I think that made a statement,” said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “Sacramento State won the conference last year, they’ve been to the second round of the NCAA Tournament the last two years, and over two games we’ve beat them 7-0. We’ve not let a goal in and we’ve played very well so that makes a statement but as I said to the boys  that game’s done and all we think about is San Jose State.”

CSUB hosts San Jose State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
