No. 20 Coastal Carolina Downs Liberty, 2-0

      LYNCHBURG, VA. – The No. 20 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers scored goals in each half to defeat the Liberty Flames, 2-0, in a Big South Conference match at Osborne Stadium, Saturday.

      Liberty falls to 1-3 in Big South play and 6-4-1 overall.  The Chanticleers were the second ranked team the Flames have hosted this season. The Flames were edged by then No. 25 Davidson, 2-1, on Sept. 19 at Osborne Stadium.

      Coastal Carolina remains unbeaten in conference play with a 5-0 mark and moves to 10-3 overall. With the victory, the Chanticleers extended their winning streak to seven games.

      Coastal Carolina netted the contest’s first goal during the 24th minute. Off a corner kick, Elis Bjornsson scored his fourth goal of the season for a 1-0 Chanticleer advantage. Defender Tommy Gudmundsson lifted the corner kick from the right sideline to the far post, where Ellis headed the ball down and in.

      Moments later, Liberty had its best scoring opportunity of the half. Forward Sachem Wilson took a pass at his feet on the right side of the 18-yard box and spun free for a shot, which hit the right post and rebounded back into play. 

      Liberty maintained possession as midfielder Will Coleman pounced on the loose ball and moved to the left side of the box for a shot. A Coastal Carolina defender blocked the attempt and cleared the ball to hold the Chanticleers’ advantage.

      Just like the first half, the second half feature wide open play by both sides. Coastal Carolina opened a two-goal lead at 66:45. Defender Ridge Robinson fed a pass from the left sideline into the 18-yard box for Kevin Le Bras at the near post. Le Bras, with a Liberty defender at his back, dropped the ball for forward Jordan Tyler, who scored into the left side of the net for what proved to be the final score of 2-0.

      The Flames had two scoring opportunities out of set pieces turned away during the final 20 minutes. A corner kick during the 77th minute was cleared by the Chanticleers, while a free kick from 35 yards out during the 82nd minute was also cleared out of the 18-yard box by a Coastal Carolina defender.

      The Chanticleers held a 13-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
      Liberty goalkeeper Scott Sutarik tied his season-high with six saves. The senior keeper also made six saves against Davidson on Sept. 19. Coastal Carolina goalkeeper David Cook-Pearles did not record a save in the contest.

      The Coastal Carolina shutout was its fifth of the season.

      Liberty next travels to Farmville, Va., for a Big South match against the Longwood Lancers.  Match time is schedule for 6 p.m.
