No. 20 Marauders Stay Unblemished, Shut Out Raiders

September 20, 2011

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville and Shippensburg men’s soccer teams combined for one shot on goal, zero saves and six yellow cards in Tuesday night's PSAC contest. The No. 20 Marauders scored on the only shot on goal of the game in the 38th minute against the reigning PSAC Champion Raiders to stay undefeated.

Shippensburg (2-3, 1-2 PSAC) upset Millersville (4-0, 3-0 PSAC) a season ago on its home turf and looked to repeat the feat on the road Tuesday. The Marauders did not allow that to happen.

In the 38th minute, a crowd of players battle for the ball to the right of the Raiders’ goalkeeper. Millersville’s Christopher Davidson gained control and centered it to the front of an empty box. Senior Eric Pepper charged up from his midfield position for an uncontested shot that found the twine. The only shot on goal in the game put the Marauders up 1-0 before the break.

Millersville led Shippensburg in shots (9-6) and corner attempts (5-2). The Raiders dominated the penalties with five of the six yellow cards, including four in the second half.

In the second session, Pepper had the chance to increase Millersville’s lead after receiving a penalty kick. Pepper knocked it just wide right keeping the game at 1-0, but he still earned the game-winner.

The Marauders’ goalkeeper Brad Benzing recorded his third shutout in four starts.

Millersville entered tonight’s match with its first national ranking of the 2011 season after the new National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll was released Tuesday afternoon. The Marauders also moved to No. 3 in the NCAA Atlantic Region behind Mercyhurst and West Virginia Wesleyan. Millersville has both the Lakers and Bobcats later on its schedule.

Millersville hits the road Thursday, Sept. 22 when it travels to Seton Hill for the first ever meeting between the Marauders and Griffins. The game is slated for 4 p.m.
