October 9, 2011

CONWAY – A pair of goals from TeeJay East helped Coastal Carolina defeat Radford 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Field. The Chants improve to 3-0 in the Big South, their best start since the 2007 campaign.

“We are delighted to get a great result against Radford, we knew coming into the game that they were a very good team that has played a difficult schedule,” said head coach Shaun Docking.

Coastal has now scored 32 goals through 11 games this season, surpassing the 29 scored over 22 matches last year.

Coastal (9-2, 3-0 BSC) scored the lone goal of the first half in the 16th minute on a shot from 22-yards out by East who received the pass down on the left side of the field from Ashton Bennett to give the Chants an early 1-0 lead.

Bennett netted his 12th goal of the season on a pass by Luis Faz placed to the top of the ’18 where Bennett ripped it past the charging Radford keeper seven minutes into the second period.

Radford answered after Coastal was called for a hand ball in the box resulting in a penalty kick that Radford’s Iyiola Awosika netted in the 56th minute.

In the 71st minute the Chants tacked on another goal as Ricky Garbanzo sent a towering corner kick to the far post where a diving header from defender Cyprian Hedrick found the back of the net for his second goal of the year.

Coastal added the last goal of the afternoon on another header, this time from East, for his second score of the day. Shawn McLaws was credited with the assist after sending a well placed ball that found the head of East.

The Chants outshot the Highlanders 13-5 and attempted five corner kicks compared to one for Radford.

Radford was booked for three yellow cards while Coastal was charged with one.

The Chants will take to the road for three straight games, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 12 against the Big South defending regular season champions High Point at 7:00 p.m.

“We know High Point is going to be very good, they are still the favorites to win the conference, we a throwing their record out the window because they are a much better team that their record shows. We must be prepared to play against a very dangerous High Point team on the road,” added Docking.
