No. 6 BYU Stifles Titans' Offense in Opener
August 23, 2013
PROVO, Utah -- Freshman Ali White scored her first career goal in the 74th minute, but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 6 BYU as the host Cougars held the Titans to just six shots in a 3-1 victory on Friday night at South Field in front of 2,462 fans in Provo, Utah.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic, who made a number of spectacular saves to keep her side in the match, finished with a career-high 11 stops on the night, but a pair of scores by Rachel Manning and another by Ashley Hatch were the difference as the Titans (0-1) remained winless in their last five season openers (0-4-1).
BYU won its season opener to improve to 1-0 overall.
White's goal spoiled the shutout for the Cougars as she dispossessed a BYU defender in the back and beat goalkeeper Erica Owens one-on-one to the right post for her first collegiate score and make it a one-goal match late. However, Manning, who headed home her first of the season off a free kick in the 26th minute, added an insurance strike in the 78th minute, converting on a penalty kick after a teammate was taken down in the box for the final 3-1 tally.
Hatch's goal came just 2:37 into the second half as she muscled past her defender and made a last-ditch lunge to poke it past a charging Maricic and trickle in for the 2-0 advantage before White closed the gap later in the period.
BYU outshot Fullerton, 21-6, on the night – including a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal -- and had 13 corner kicks to just one for the Titans, who were led by two shots from junior Rebecca Wilson. Hatch led the Cougars with five shots on the night, putting four of those on frame.
Cal State Fullerton concludes its opening weekend on Sunday (Aug. 25) at 4 p.m. as the Titans host Fresno State at Titan Stadium. The first 200 students with a valid Titan Card through the gate on Sunday will receive a free $5 gift card courtesy of Albertson's on Placentia Ave. and Yorba Linda Blvd.
