The Northeastern women’s soccer team fell to the Clemson Tigers Sunday afternoon, 2-1. Clemson improves to 5-0-0 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 2-3-0.

Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when forward Maddy Elder put home a header off of a free kick from Stacey Huddleston.

The Huskies tied the game quickly when forward Veronica Napoli scored her second goal of the season in the 16th minute from close range. Napoli’s goal, the 28th of her career, puts her just two behind the program’s all-time record, held by Kristin Kowalik (2003-06).

The Tigers broke the tie in the 66th minute when Elder scored her second tally of the game.

Clemson outshot Northeastern 18 to 10. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Burnett made nine saves, playing all 90 minutes of the match. It was Burnett’s fifth game in net for the Huskies. She’s now tallied 28 saves on the season.

The Huskies return to action when they take on LaSalle this Friday, Sept. 9, at Parsons Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
