Northeastern tops St. Joes 2-1 in OT

August 28, 2015

BOSTON – Junior Mackenzie Dowd headed in a Carly Wilhelm cross 1:55 into overtime to lift the Northeastern women's soccer team (2-1-0) to a thrilling 2-1 win over St. Joseph's (1-1-0) on Friday at Parsons Field.

Sophomore Kayla Cappuzzo opened the scoring for Northeastern in the sixth minute, before St. Joseph's answered in the 47th minute to even the scoreline at one apiece. Despite quality chances at both ends, the game stayed even until Dowd rose high in the box to nod home her fourth career game-winner from six yards out.

Goal Recaps
• Cappuzzo netted her second goal of the year just 4:49 into the match. Freshman Nicole Gorman created the chance with a shot from the right of the box that was stopped by Hawks' keeper Grace Bendon (four saves). Bendon could not push the rebound out of danger, however, and Cappuzzo swooped in to finish from point-blank range.
• St. Joseph's scored on its first shot on target only 1:21 into the second half. Emily Gingrich collected the ball outside the box on the left wing, before turning and firing a curling effort that looped over the head of NU keeper Nathalie Nidetch (two saves) to even the scoreline.
• Northeastern then won the game in extra time following a corner kick from redshirt junior Breeana Koemans. After the ball bounced to the top of the box, sophomore Hannah Lopiccolo sent it back in to the right of the goal. Wilhelm ran onto the pass, before placing a perfect lofted cross into the area for Dowd to head home at 91:55.
