Northeastern Women's Soccer vs. UMass
BOSTON – Shayna Blackwood’s first goal of the season and five saves by Paige Burnett weren’t enough for the Northeastern women’s soccer team as the Huskies lost in overtime at Massachusetts Sunday afternoon, 2-1.
Sunday’s game marked the third-straight overtime match for NU (0-6-3), and fifth overall.
Morgan Hilby initiated a strong offensive start for the Huskies when she drilled a shot off the crossbar in the 8th minute.
Hanna Terry continued that pressure less than two minutes later when her shot attempt went just wide of the net.
Carina Deandreis got a shot off in the 15th minute, and minutes later Blackwood received a through pass and capitalized on the Huskies’ fourth shot of the game, giving NU a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Blackwood became the Huskies’ fifth goal scorer of the season.
NU carried its 1-0 lead into halftime, with goalkeeper Paige Burnett recording four saves in the period.
The Minutewomen’s Brittany Moore knotted the game at one apiece when she received a free kick and scored in the far post in the 67th minute.
Megan Burke scored the game-winning goal for UMass just over five minutes into overtime.
Despite NU’s quick start to the game on the offensive end, the Huskies managed just one shot after halftime and were outshot 14-7 for the game.
The Huskies open conference play when they travel to College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 27, for a 7 p.m. kickoff with the Cougars.
