EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern scored a goal in each half and held a dominating 23-5 advantage on shots, defeating Oakland 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Georgia Waddle tallied her second goal of the season, putting NU ahead, 1-0, and Sami Schrakamp scored her first of the year to give the Wildcats the 2-0 victory. Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Hascher secured her third consecutive shutout and second career win.

With the victory, Northwestern improves to 2-0-1 in the last three games, all three coming in the form of shutouts.

Northwestern maintained possession for most of the first half and had a staggering 15-2 advantage on shots in the frame. The flurry of chances began in the 21st minute with the Wildcats taking their first corner kick of the match. Jennifer Korn’s shot off the corner was blocked but it set up a rebound chance for Kate Allen that was blocked. NU then had another corner that led to another shot for Bo Podkopacz that was saved by Oakland keeper Payj O’Shea.

An Oakland foul about 20 yards outside of the net gave Northwestern a favorable free kick spot with about 17 minutes left in the half but Kate Allen’s shot sailed just high of the crossbar. The Wildcats kept putting the pressure on though with more scoring opportunities before Waddle, who subbed in at the 36th minute, put the team on the board in the 39th minute.

Nicole Jewell served up a corner kick from the left side that found Waddle just in front of the box as she headed it in for the score. NU had two additional looks to end the half, an Addie Steiner shot that was blocked and another by Korn that went high.

In the second half, Schrakamp subbed in at the 63:15 mark and shortly after provided the insurance goal for Northwestern. Steiner sent a pass to Schrakamp who scored on a one-touch shot from inside the box, giving NU the 2-0 lead in the 68th minute.

NU continued to maintain possession for a majority of the second half but Oakland did manage to take three shots in the frame, one of which was saved by Hascher. The Golden Grizzlies also had the 2-1 advantage on corners in the half.

The Wildcats had the 8-3 advantage on shots in the second to outshoot Oakland 23-5 for the match. Hascher finished with two saves, one in each half, while O’Shea saved seven of NU’s nine shots on goal. Schrakamp led Northwestern with six shots while Allen, Steiner and Korn had four each.

Sunday’s match against Oakland, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament a year ago, marked the conclusion of the 2013 nonconference schedule. Northwestern now prepares for the always-competitive Big Ten slate, which begins Friday in University Park, Pa., against the defending Big Ten champions, Penn State.
