Nouanesengsy Hat Trick Lifts Hoosiers
August 17, 2012

Bloomington, Ind. - Junior Lisa Nouanesengsy recorded her second career hat trick to provide all of the offense in a 3-0 victory for Indiana against Arkansas State in the season opener on Friday night at Armstrong Stadium. She becomes the first player in Indiana women's soccer history to post two career hat tricks and it is the eighth hat trick in program history.

“Lisa really came out focused tonight and took advantage of the great position that her teammates put her in to be able to finish with goals,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “This was a great way to start the season and now we have to come back out and back it up on Sunday against Ohio.”

She put the Hoosiers (1-0) on the board just 50 seconds into the contest, taking a perfect pass into the box from Rebecca Candler and easily beating the ASU (0-1) keeper. Eight minutes later, Candler was fouled inside the box so the Hoosiers were awarded a penalty kick, which Nouanesengsy stepped up and put home for a 2-0 IU lead.

And then in the 60th minute, she took a beautiful crossing pass from Monica Melink and drilled a hard shot over the keeper's shoulder for the third goal of the game and cementing her place in the IU history books. Her first career hat trick on Aug. 21, 2011, against Butler at Armstrong Stadium.

It was in the second half that IU defense really clamped down, holding the Red Wolves to just one shot while the Hoosiers collected 13 in the half.

Shannon Flower and Sarah Stone combined for the shutout in goal, making just two saves. The Hoosiers outshot the Red Wolves by a 20-8 margin.

Indiana will return to Armstrong Stadium on Sunday to take on Ohio University at 2:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to stay after the game for a autograph session with the team.
