Nouanesengsy's Hat Trick Propels Hoosiers In 6-1 Win Over Butler

August 21, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore midfielder Lisa Nouanesengsy etched her name into the record books on Sunday afternoon at Armstrong Stadium as she tallied three goals to tie the Indiana single-game record and lead the Hoosiers to a 6-1 win over the Butler Bulldogs. It is the first hat trick by a Hoosier since Kristin Arnold had one on Sept. 28, 2007, against Northwestern and it’s the seventh overall in IUWS history.

Joining Nouanesengsy in the scoring column were Carly Samp, Abby Smith and Orianica Velasquez as the Hoosiers(1-0-1) matched their season-best goal output from last season which also came in a 6-0 victory at Butler.

Velasquez led IU with six shots in the game, four of which were on goal, while Nouanesengsy only needed three shots to score her trio of markers.

“This was a very good win for us today coming off a tie on Friday,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said.  “We continued to put pressure on Butler and were able to convert on a number of very good chances. Lisa (Nouanesengsy) had a couple of spectacular efforts that resulted in goals for us and played a tremendous game for us in the midfield.”

Carly Samp opened the scoring for the Hoosiers in the 10th minute when a misplayed clearing attempt put her in on goal behind the Butler (1-1-0) defense and she put it home just inside the far post, under the diving keeper.

Then in the 17th minute, Nouanesengsy corralled a loose ball in the box and drilled a shot into the upper half of the goal to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.  It was her first career goal as a Hoosier and was just the start of a big day. Just over three minutes later she beat a pair of Butler defenders on the left sideline and went in on goal, where she beat another BU defender. She then dribbled out into space and beat the keeper on the short side for her second goal of the day and all of a sudden the Hoosiers were up 3-0 less than 20 minutes into the contest.

“My teammates did a great job of putting in positions where I could be successful today and I was able to find the back of the goal for us and help us get a win,” Nouanesengsy said after the game. “We really wanted to come out and get a win today as a team and we did so it was a good day. Now just have to move forward and looking towards the next game.”

The IU defense was called for a hand-ball violation in the box on a Butler corner kick, so the Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick. Katie Griswold stepped up and hit a shot to the right side of the goal, just past the outstretched arms of diving IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell, so the Hoosiers took a 3-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.

But the pressure from the Hoosiers did not stop there, as freshman midfielder Abby Smith took a pass from Monica Melink just outside the top of the box in the 65th minute. She took one touch around the BU defense and found the back of the goal for the first time in her brief IU career. It was also the first career assist for redshirt freshman Monica Melink.

In the 76th minute, Orianica Velasquez put her name on the board with a nifty touch on a through ball from Smith that trickled under the diving BU keeper to increase the lead to 5-1.

Finally, in the 80th minute, Nouanesengsy found herself in scoring position again thanks to a perfect pass from freshman Tori Keller. Nouanesengsy took a dribble and blasted a shot into the upper half of the goal to complete the hat trick and give the Hoosiers their sixth goal of the game.

Campbell made four saves in goal for the Hoosiers and got a great team save from defender Ciersten Burks late in the second half to keep the Bulldogs off the board for a second time.

The Hoosiers will play their first road contest of the year on Friday, Aug. 26, when they travel to the University of South Florida for a non-conference battle at 7:30 p.m. ET. Then they will return home on Sunday (Aug. 28) to take on the Oakland Grizzlies at 1:00 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium, where it will be International Day, as fans who wear their favorite international soccer jersey to the game will receive a free prize.
