NYU Women's Soccer Earns Second Straight Road Victory

September 23, 2011

The New York University women’s soccer team cruised to a 5-1 victory at Manhattanville College on Friday, September 23, in Purchase, NY.

Serra Tumay netted two goals for the Violets (5-2), who outshot the Valiants (0-9) 27-6 on a rainy night. Cami Crawford, Hannah Speer and Leslie Smith added tallies for NYU, while Meg Patten made four saves in goal to earn her fourth victory of the season.

“We’ve been concentrating in practice on attacking and finishing, and it really showed tonight,” said NYU head coach Michele Canning.

Tumay was the first Violet to finish, scoring her first goal of the contest on a free kick in the 17th minute. The junior bent a ball from way out near the sideline that found the back of the net.

Just three minutes later, Crawford netted her third goal of the season, scoring on a strike from 25 yards out.

NYU added its third goal of the first half in the 32nd minute, when Nicole Anzalone played Hannah Speer through the defense and Speer finished for her first career goal.

Manhattanville struck first in the second half, as Sonia Occhionero scored on a free kick from 35 yards out. But the Violets needed just 12 minutes to respond, as Leslie Smith collected the ball just outside the 18, turned to face the goal and blasted a shot inside the far post.

Two minutes later, Tumay tallied her second goal of the contest, blasting a rocket from the edge of the 18 into the left corner.

NYU returns to action on Sunday when it travels to St. Joseph’s College-Long Island in Patchogue, NY. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
