October 1, 2011

NORFOLK, VA--Gideon Asante and Tim Hopkinson each scored goals to lead 15th ranked Old Dominion (5-2/1-1) to a 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association win over previously unbeaten Delaware (6-1-1/1-1) Saturday afternoon.

"Today's game was a very physical, hard fought battle. Typical of any CAA match. Their a very difficult team to play against. Their counter attack is excellent and that's complimented by two great forwards. But our backline didn't give them too many clear looks at goal today. They didn't get a goal, so I'm very please with that.Scoring the first goal of the game is always important. It provides momentum so we didn't have to "chase" the game. Again is was a great scoring the first goal and it was a great touch by Tim."- ODU Head Coach Alan Dawson.

ODU's first goal came 8:31 left in the first half by sophomore Tim Hopkinson (Nottingham, England) who with Delaware's keeper out in front of the box, floated over him to put the Monarchs up, 1-0 at halftime. It is Hopkinson's third goal of the season to go along with nine total points.

In the second half, ODU added the second goal with 14:16 left in the match when freshman Ivan Militar (Szeged, Hungary) passed it to Gideon Asante (Sunyani,Ghana) on the right side and beat the keeper with a shot to the far left corner of the net. the goal was Asante's fourth of the season to go along with 11 total points. Militar is now tied for the team lead with three assists.

"Everyone deserves a second chance and that's what we got here today."-ODU sophomore Gideon Asante.

Delaware outshot the Monarchs, 19-13, but shots on goal were even at 7-7. ODU's goalkeeper Victor Francoz (Fleurieu Sur Saone,France) came up with six saves and his third shutout of the season to lower his goals against average to 1.0 along with a .837 saves percentage. ODU's backline led by Tommy Webb (Auckland, New Zealand) and Ryan Oakes (Virginia Beach, VA.) also made key defensive blocks.
