ODU-Drexel Tie 1-1

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University men’s soccer battled Drexel to a 1-1 tie Friday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

With the tie, ODU has to wait until tomorrow to figure out where they will be seeded for the upcoming CAA Tournament.  The Monarchs can finish as high as the No. 2 seed, and as low as the No. 4 seed.

After a scoreless first half, ODU got on the board in the 57th minute on a goal from Yannick Smith.  Smith got the ball on the left side and made a move to the middle of the field where he fired a shot on the ground and beat the keeper to the left side of the goal for the 1-0 Old Dominion advantage.

The Dragons tied the score at one in the 76th minute on a goal from Ken Tribbett.  The ball was deflected back to Tribbett in the box, who was on the ground, but was able to get enough on the ball and just inside the left post to tie the score.

The game went into overtime where ODU had a possible goal taken off the board on an offsides call.  With under a minute to play in the first overtime, Malcolm LeBourne had a shot from inside the box stopped by ODU keeper Victor Francoz.

Drexel had a pair of chances in the second overtime on two shots by Mark Donohue, but Francoz was there again to preserve the tie.  The Monarchs had a chance with two minutes left but a foul was called on ODU.

Drexel outshot ODU 18-15 and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Pentti Pussinen made one save for Drexel while Francoz came up with nine saves for the Monarchs.

ODU will compete in the CAA Tournament next week which will be held at James Madison.
