ODU Hosts Kentucky In C-USA Match-up
NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Soccer Monarchs (4-2-1/1-0), unbeaten in their last four matches return home to host the Wildcats of Kentucky Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as part of a C-USA doubleheader with the Lady Monarchs who play East Carolina at 5 p.m. at the ODU Soccer Complex. There will be a fireworks show at the conclusion of the men’s contest.
Kentucky is led in scoring by sophomore forward Isak Krogstad with three goals, two assists and eight points, followed by senior defender Brad Doliner with two goals, one assist for five total points, and pre-season All-C-USA defensive selection Steven Perinovic. The Wildcats have been sharing goalkeeping duties between sophomore Callum Irving (1.25 GAA) and senior Jack van Arsdale (1.67 GAA). This is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Kentucky is an associate member of C-USA.
The Monarchs are fresh off their 2-1 win at defending C-USA Champion and 15th ranked Tulsa.
Tim Hopkinson currently ranks third in C-USA with 13 total points. He is tied with Tulsa’s Christian Mata and FAU’s Ray Price with six goals each. Senior goalkeeper Sean Stowe, the league’s Defensive Player of the Week has a 1.12 goals against average.
In the latest RPI listings, seven of C-USA teams are in the top 50. New Mexico is 29th, UAB is 33rd, Charlotte is 34, ODU is 35, Florida Atlantic is 43, Tulsa is 44 and South Carolina is at 47. Last year, six Teams now in C-USA made the NCAA Tournament. They included: Tulsa and New Mexico (Sweet 16), Along with Charlotte, ODU, Kentucky and UAB.
ODU’s Alan Dawson ranks third among C-USA head coaches in career wins. Dawson is currently 315-130-41 (186-100-31 at ODU). Mark Berson of South Carolina is 458-202-65 in 36 years as a head coach, followed by Bob Gray of Marshall with 424-233-51 in 36 years.
Friday’s match is all part of ODU's Homecoming weekend where 500 free t-shirt vouchers will be given away starting when gates open to the women's soccer match until they are gone. They can be redeemed for a shirt in the first half of the men's match.
The contest will be the first internet broadcast of the season with ODU Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander providing the play-by-play along with former Soccer Monarch Gregg Mottinger (ODU ’08) providing the color.
