Ohio State men beat IUPUI

September 24, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Doug Verhoff scored on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to give the No. 24-ranked Ohio State men's soccer team a 1-0 win over IUPUI Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes remain undefeated at 4-0-3, tying the most games without a loss to start the season during head coach John Bluem's 13 seasons. The loss drops Jaguars' record to 1-5-2.

Verhoff's goal was the seventh-consecutive made PK for Ohio State, dating back to 2005, and ended an otherwise fruitless night for Ohio State's potent attack. The Buckeyes out-shot IUPUI 34-6 on the night, marking the most Buckeye shots in a single game in at least seven years.

"It's difficult to score goals against a team that [drops their whole team back to defend]," Bluem said. "It took 34 shots. They were very good and very organized defensively, but at the end of the day, it's not positive soccer. And it's not all that fun."

Andrew Magill ended the night with 10 shots, the most for an OSU player since Justin Cook also took 10 against Bowling Green Sept. 24, 2004. The senior captain paced the attack in the first half, posting a career-high eight shots in that period alone.

A native of Oak Brook, Ill., Magill put together a pair of back-to-back shots in the 35th minute that nearly gave the Buckeyes the lead. From five yards out, he had a shot stopped by IUPUI keeper Tyler Keever, but collected his own rebound before poking it wide left from point-blank range.

Those attempts would stand as just two of the countless close scoring chances for the Buckeyes. Magill would nail the crossbar late in the second half, while Chris Hegngi hit the post and narrowly missed a goal on the deflection.

The Jags' Keever also made nine stops on the night, the only misplay coming in the 81st minute with Verhoff's penalty kick. An IUPUI defender tripped up Magill inside the goal box, giving Ohio State its first PK attempt since Sept. 7, 2008 against Tulsa. Verhoff converted and the Buckeyes played out the clock to hold on for the win.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Matt Lampson earned his second win between the pipes, both shutouts, making three stops against just six shots faced.

The Buckeyes return to action at 2:30 p.m. against No. 21 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The game is the first true road contest for Ohio State this season and will be featured on Big Ten Network beginning on tape delay at 4 p.m. Kenn Tomasch, Richard Broad and Holly Neiderkohr will call the action.

"It's going to be very difficult there; they are a very good program," said Bluem of the upcoming match. "They have very good individual players and, collectively, they play very well as a team. They are off to a great start as defending Big Ten Champions."
