Ohio State men beat Oakland
October 8, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Joshua Breto scored the lone goal of the game in the ninth minute to lead the Ohio State men's soccer team over Oakland, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. The win snapped a brief two-game losing skid and improved their record to 6-2-3 on the season. Oakland is now 5-4-2 on the season.
"Getting the early goal was a great boost for the team," head coach John Bluem said. "Oakland is a very talented attacking team, so with the lead in our favor, we were able to concentrate on defending. Our back four played very well and Matt Lampson came up with some very good saves in goal to keep us in the game."
Breto tallied his first goal of the season and third of his career, all game-winners, off a pass from freshman Austin McAnena at the 8:52 mark. The Delray Beach, Fla., native chipped the ball over the head of Grizzly goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt off a pass from McAnena in the box.
From there, the Buckeyes buckled down on defense and limited Oakland to five shots on goal for the day. Lampson made five stops, while his counterpart Hildebrandt tallied seven.
Oakland ended the day with a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Buckeyes return to action at 5 p.m. Friday against Cleveland State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The game is a doubleheader with the women's team and is the first of four-consecutive home games for Ohio State.
