Ohio State men defeat Wisconsin
October 31, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Konrad Warzycha scored the game-winning goal as the Ohio State men’s soccer team put a scare into Wisconsin with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon at a spooky Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes improve to 9-5-2 on the season, 3-2-0 in the Big Ten and remain undefeated (6-0-1) on their home grass. Wisconsin drops to 2-12-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.
“Well, [we got] a win,” head coach John Bluem said after the match. “That was the most important thing today. We needed to make sure we got a result. Great goal by Konrad [Warzycha] in the first half. Excellent service by Sam Scales. We just grinded it out. Let’s face it; it wasn’t a great game today.”
Great game or not, the Buckeyes pieced together back-to-back wi Matt Lampson ns for the first time since mid-September and moved into a tie for second in the Big Ten with Michigan. They also extended their conference-leading shutout mark to eight and allowed’s goals-against average to drop to 0.72 on the season.
The match will be televised on same-day delay at 7 p.m. Sunday on the Big Ten Network.
Warzycha made it happen with his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 28th minute off an assist from Sam Scales, who earned his 15th career helper on the play and moved into seventh place all-time at Ohio State with Andrew Magill (2006-09). Following a Wisconsin foul, Scales took the free kick from about 25 yards out and sailed the ball into the goal area where Warzycha showed his size and athleticism with a diving header into the right side.
“We’ve been working on set pieces in practice,” Warzycha said of his score. “It just happened to work out perfectly; I was in the right place at the right time.”
The Warzycha-Scales tandem also was responsible for the game-winner in the Buckeyes’ 2-0 victory Wednesday vs. Oakland and has helped the team post set-piece scores in each of the last three contests.
Even with the early lead, neither team let down their attack for the remainder of the contest. Warzycha posted six shots, placing five on goal, and played with a fervor in the midfielder that led Big Ten Network commentator Chris Doran to remark on the senior midfielder’s transition into a player that has really become equally strong on both sides of the ball.
Several others got in on the action, including Austin McAnena, who posted all three of his shots in the second half, and Joshua Breto who remained a threat in the penalty area and tallied a pair of scoring attempts in the process. Defensively, the likes of David Tiemstra and Matt Gold remained consistent and limited Wisconsin’s scoring attempts with pressure in the defensive third.
Both goalkeepers – Lampson and his counterpart Max Jentsch – ended the day with six saves, divided evenly between the halves with four and two. Ohio State out-shot the Badgers 15-9 and had a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
The Buckeyes welcome Indiana to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7 for the regular-season finale for both teams. The Hoosiers play for the Big Ten title at 5 p.m. today vs. Northwestern; if the Wildcats win, next week’s contest will have important conference implications. It also will serve as senior day for Matt Gold, Sam Scales and Konrad warzycha, one of the most successful classes in OSU history.
The match will be televised on same-day delay on the Big Ten Network beginning at 7 p.m.
Because of a men’s basketball game around the same time, soccer fans are encouraged to park in the Buckeye lots across from the stadium on Fred Taylor Dr. and enter through the north gates of JOMS.
