Ohio State men fall to Drake in NCAA 2nd round
November 22, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Luke Gorczyca scored in the 97th minute of action to lead Drake over fourth-seeded Ohio State, 1-0, in the second round of NCAA Tournament action at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Big Ten Champion Buckeyes end their season with a 12-5-4 record, while the Bulldogs advance to the third round for the first time in program history with a 15-6-2 mark. They will face the winner of No. 13 St. John's vs. Boston College next Sunday.
"They defended very well," head coach John Bluem said after the game. "We fought but just didn't get the outcome. It's not easy to go on the road and get a result but they did that today. It wasn't our day; it wasn't meant to be. The inability to produce a goal today got us ... We've had the fortune with late and timely goals the last few weeks but we ran out of luck."
Gorczyca's goal came in the latter minutes of the first overtime period off a melee in the box. Played the ball by Thomas Ostrander, Gorczyca got a foot on it and sent the shot over the heads of the Buckeye defenders at the 96:56 mark for Ohio State's only OT loss of the season.
Ohio State finished the day with a narrow advantage in shots, 11-10, and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks. Big Ten co-Freshman of the Year Matt Lampson made three stops in goal, while his counterpart Michael Drozd came up with one save on the day.
Sam Scales led the Buckeyes' offensive charge, taking four shots with Konrad Warzycha coming up with three. Austin McAnena made the most of his one shot attempt, rocking it just over the crossbar midway through the second half with one of Ohio State's closest scoring opportunities. Not included in the box score, however, are several quality runs into the goal box by Andrew Magill and Chris Hegngi that were thwarted by an unusually stingy Bulldog defense.
Though the 2009 season is over the Buckeyes, there is still plenty to be proud of.
"We pulled off great things this year," Bluem said. "We won the Big Ten title in the regular season and the tournament. This was the highest seed the program has ever had. We're a young team and we accomplished quite a bit. We fell short of a dream in the end but with so many returning players experience will help next year."
