Orange Shuts Out Bowling Green

October 13, 2015

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 16/-- Syracuse men’s soccer team is back on the winning track after a 3-0 victory against Bowling Green on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Three different players scored for the Orange as it posted its sixth win in its last seven matches.

“We knew that Bowling Green was a real threat,” Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. “They’ve scored a lot of goals so it was important to concentrate. Bowling Green is dangerous in transition. They had a couple of minutes in the first half and had a push in the second half, but overall, I thought we really limited their chances. We were good going forward today. I thought we created enough chances to win the game.”

The Orange (9-3-1) controlled the first half, outshooting the Falcons, 8-1. Sophomore Julian Buescher (Duelmen, Germany) just missed giving the Orange the lead when his bending ball from the top of the right side of the box went just wide. Syracuse wouldn’t miss on its next opportunity. Junior Oyvind Alseth (Trondheim, Norway) served the ball into the box to Buescher, who one-timed it to junior Ben Polk (Banbury, UK) on the right side of the box. Polk put his shot into the left corner of the net in the 15th minute for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Syracuse continued to press forward and junior Chris Nanco (Brampton, Ontario) put a shot past Bowling Green goalkeeper Nick Landsberger, but a defender was there to knock the shot away to keep the Falcons (6-6-1) within one.

The Orange quickly added to its lead after halftime. Freshman Andreas Jenssen (Lommendalen, Norway) served the ball into the box where Buescher headed it into the goal for his fifth tally of the season. Jenssen earned an assist on the play for his first career point.

Syracuse continued to control the pace of the match and capped the scoring in the 75th minute. The Orange earned a corner kick, which was subsequently played into the box. The ball bounced off two Bowling Green defenders to junior Louis Cross (Lancashire, England), who was standing right on the goal line. Cross directed the ball into the back of the net for his second career goal.

Tuesday’s match marked the fifth this season in which Syracuse has recorded three or more goals. The Orange ranks ninth in the nation in points, eighth in total goals and 12th in points per game in the most recent NCAA statistics.

Syracuse outshot Bowling Green, 17-4, and earned 10 corner kicks to two for the Falcons. Orange freshman goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert (Eiterfeld, Germany) made two saves and posted his first career shutout. Landsberger finished with seven saves.

The Orange continues its homestand on Saturday, Oct. 17 when it hosts No. 4 Clemson at the SU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
