Orediggers Blank No. 14 Rangers, 3-0
GOLDEN – Colorado School of Mines men's soccer shut out local rival Regis for the first time in three seasons on Sunday, topping the NSCAA 14th-ranked Rangers, 3-0, at CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden.
Mines (10-6, 8-4 RMAC) struck in the initial four minutes for the second straight home bout as freshman Nikolaus Grotz found senior Matthew Alemann who converted the short, left wing shot to the top shelf from 15 yards 3:46 into the afternoon.
The men cushioned the halftime lead to two-nil with 1:40 to play in the frame; freshman Preston Migaki gathered a close feed sent by junior Joe Haines at the top of the box and delivered his first collegiate score 11 yards to right net.
Grotz completed the scoring at 60:54, skillfully weaving through defenders into the box and connecting on a straight-on, eight-yard look to the bottom, right-90 for his third outing of three or more points.
The Orediggers finished with a 17-10 margin in shots, including 5-4 in shots on goal, while Regis (11-4, 8-4 RMAC) had a 6-5 advantage on corners tries.
Along with Alemann, Migaki and Grotz, junior Ryan Leach and sophomore Aaron Safadi each sent one to attempt to frame.
Sophomore netminder Collin Hall had four saves in the win, improving to 5-4 with his third shutout.
Tied for second in the RMAC standings with the Rangers, Mines resumes its regular season-ending three-game homestand at 7 p.m. Friday against Fort Lewis.
