OGDEN, Utah. – Sophomore Milan Cabrera recorded her first two career goals Friday as she helped propel the 25th ranked Oregon State women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Weber State at Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden, Utah.

 

“The game went really well for us today,” Oregon State women’s soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the match. “It was a solid game for us both offensively and defensively. Colleen Boyd continues to be outstanding for us in goal and we’re beginning to get into our style of play offensively.”

 

Cabrera’s two goals Friday were the first of her career. She had only taken seven total shots so far in her career with only three of those coming on goal. The first of Cabrera’s two goals on the day come with the Beavers trailing 1-0 in the 24th minute of the match. She took the ball off of a Justyne Freud corner kick and headed the ball which bounced over the Wildcat goalkeeper.

 

“We’ve been practicing our set pieces all year and today everything came together,” Rhode said. “Milan picked the right sport to attack on the corner kicks and Justyne Freud hit the ball really well playing it in from the corner.”

 

The match remained tied until freshman Jenna Richardson took the ball from Megan Miller and created a one-on-one with Wildcat keeper Ryann Waldman and drove it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and Miller’s first assist of the season giving the Beavers a 2-1 advantage.

 

Weber State (1-11) tied the game in the 64th minute when Jessie Braddley took a header off of a free kick from 11 yards out and found the back of the net for her second goal of the match.

 

The score remained tied at 2-2 until Cabrera was able to connect with Freud again off of a corner kick to give the Beavers a 3-2 lead which remained the final score. Freud’s two assists on the day were the first of her career and her first career points. Cabrera became the only Beaver so far this season to record a multi-goal match.

 

Oregon State (7-1-1) goal keeper junior Colleen Boyd finished the game with season high five saves in the match. The Beavers recorded 21 shots in the match which is the second most this season behind a 28 shot performance against San Diego State on Sept. 19. They held the Wildcats to only nine shots on the day.

 

The Beavers improved their record on the season to 7-1-1 which is their best start to a season since they started with the same record in 2001. Their seventh win puts them half way to their total win count of 14 in 2009 when they made their way to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

 

The Beavers move from Ogden, Utah to Salt Lake City, Utah where they will take on the Utah Utes Sunday with a start time set for 12 p.m. PT.

 

“Utah will be a tough opponent for us on Sunday,” Rhode said. “We need to recover from this game physically and refocus on Utah to prepare for this next match. If we continue to play the way we have been it should be a good match.”
