Oregon State women lose to Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Oregon State’s soccer team dropped a tough, 1-0 overtime decision to Arizona State in Pac-10 Conference action on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State fell to 11-7-1 overall, 3-5-0 in conference play, while Arizona State improved to 8-7-3, 1-6-1 in league action.
Karin Volpe’s goal in the 95th minute proved to be the difference after a scoreless regulation. Following an Oregon State foul, Kari Shane took the ensuing free kick and found Volpe, who headed the ball into the back of the net for the golden goal victory.
Oregon State could not find the back of the net against Arizona State goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore, who recorded five saves in the shutout victory.
Ashley Wood took the tough-luck loss as the senior made three stops in net while holding the Sun Devils scoreless during regulation.
Arizona State held a slight, 10-8 edge in shots while Oregon State held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Red Nixon and Melinda Ingalls led the way with two shots on goal apiece for Oregon State.
Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 8, as the Beavers travel to Tucson, Ariz., for an important match with Arizona at 10:00 a.m. The match with the Wildcats concludes the regular season for the Beavers as Oregon State is looking for its first NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship berth since the 1994 season.
