For Immediate Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Sophomore Padraic Ormsby (Wicklow, Ireland/Peninsula) found the back of the net in the 69th minute to break the deadlock and lift the Indiana Tech men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over crosstown rival University of Saint Francis on Friday night at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium.

The Warriors created plenty of opportunities to take control of the game but were unable to capitalize on any of them until Ormsby managed to put one past the Cougar keeper for the eventual game-winner.

"It's always better to learn lessons from a game that you win, but we have some things to address for sure,” said Indiana Tech Head Coach David Bokhart following the match.

“I think our sharpness in the final 1/3 is lacking and we need to take advantage of our opponent’s mistakes. They gifted us 4-5 chances at the start of the second half and we have to bury teams that make those mistakes.”

The Warriors have won the last three contests over USF, giving them a 7-6-1 lead over the Cougars in the series since 1999. Tonight’s win was also Tech’s third straight season-opening win.

Saint Francis nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute, but the goal was waved off on an offside call. The Warriors responded right away and almost scored a goal of their own, but the shot banged off the post.

Tech had another chance late in the first half, but USF goalkeeper Brandon Brack made a nice save on a shot from junior Shane Scrivner (Manchester, England/Northwest).

The Warriors continued to put the pressure on early in the second half, but USF’s Brack was up to the challenge. The Cougar netminder made six saves before Ormsby scored an unassisted goal, as Tech escaped with the win.

Indiana Tech outshot the home team 18-5, and had six corner kicks compared to the Cougars’ zero.

Coach Bokhart’s postgame thoughts: “We lack cohesiveness and have to be more composed with a lead. We knew their chances would come on dead ball situations and we played right into their hands. One more chance to their #8 (Jason Walcutt) and we'd have been looking at overtime. They took advantage when we lost focus and were unfortunate at the end.”

“I like what we have the potential to be, we just need to keep growing as a group and working a bit harder on some important details.”

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, August 29 when they host Illinois Tech in their home opener. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
