JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Troy Barr could not have picked a better time to knock-in his first career goal. The Lipscomb midfielder picked off an errant Jacksonville block for the game-winning goal in Atlantic Sun Conference men’s soccer action Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla.

Playing their third-straight overtime match, the Bisons picked up the victory to push their record to 5-10-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the A-Sun. The Dolphins dropped to 3-11-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the loop, thrusting the Bisons into sixth place in the A-Sun standings helping the future of a tournament bid.

“We competed all week during practice and came into the game with confidence and belief in our system of play,” Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow said. “Miguel Hof kept us in the game, stopping two legitimate go scoring opportunities from JU.”

After an evenly played 90 minutes, with the Bisons attempting 15 shots and the Dolphins attempting 12, Lipscomb turned up the heat in the overtime periods.

The Purple and Gold had a golden opportunity to light up the scoreboard in the 94th minute as senior Jeremy Reid rocketed a shot just inches above the cross bar off a free kick.

The shots kept coming in the first extra period with Reid, Josue Chavez, Reece Holcombe and Anthony Cedano combining for six shots to put the pressure on Gavin Carlin.

Fourteen seconds into the second and final overtime period, the fireworks began for the Bisons. Taking the opening kick-off to the goal line, Holcombe attempted a shot from eight yards out that was blocked by a Dolphins defender. The block landed directly on Barr’s foot, striking the ball into the back of the net for the victory.

The Bisons welcomed the return of Miguel Hof in goal as he secured his second shutout of his freshman campaign stopping all five shots he faced.

With the offense taking over in the extra periods, Lipscomb held JU to just one shot after regulation and 13 total in the game, launching 23 of its own shots.

“Our freshman stepped up in overtime with Josue, Reece and Troy combining superbly on the game-winner,” Morrow said. “It was a great team win.

“Getting a result Sunday is on our mind now. For us to be a conference contending team we need to find ways to win and string wins together.”

The Bisons stay in Jacksonville, playing at North Florida on Sunday at noon in another pivotal A-Sun contest as Lipscomb looks to secure a tournament slot.
