LOS ANGELES – Madison Heilmann’s first goal of the season four minutes into the first overtime period Sunday afternoon snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted host Loyola Marymount to a 2-1 extra-time victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles.

The loss dropped the Titans to 0-2 overall on the year, opening the season with a pair of one-goal losses. The Lions, who fell in their season opener to Cal Poly, 3-1, on Friday, improved to 1-1 overall on the season.

Heilmann’s “golden goal” came at the 3:54 mark of overtime, winning a 50-50 ball on the left side, touched it ahead slightly, and launched a shot from 40 yards out that floated over the head of Fullerton keeper Katie Pulliam into the far-post netting to end the match.

It was the first overtime match of the year for the Titans, who played in an NCAA record-tying 11 overtime matches in 2011, finishing 4-4-3 in those contests.

For the second-straight match, it was freshman Christina Burkenroad who got Fullerton on the board first as the San Diego native netted her second goal in as many matches just before halftime. Burkenroad, who scored her first career goal for Fullerton in its 3-2 loss to USC on Aug. 17, took passes from teammates Erica Mazeau and Nikki McCants and put it home from eight yards out for the 1-0 lead.

LMU found the equalizer in the 62nd minute off the foot of Brianne Medved, who slotted home a free kick to the near post from just outside the box on the right side to tie the match at 1-1.

The Lions outshot the Titans, 13-8, but Fullerton applied pressure all afternoon, taking eight of the nine corner kicks in the match. Burkenroad and Rebecca Wilson each had two shots for the Titans while Medved led all players with four shots on the day.

Cal State Fullerton’s road trip continues next weekend as the Titans make a trip to The Great Lakes State to take on Michigan and Michigan State. Fullerton will meet the Wolverines on Friday (Aug. 24) at 3 p.m. PT before clashing with the Spartans on Friday (Aug. 26) at 10 a.m. PT.
