Panthers drop home opener to Neb-Omaha

CEDAR FALLS, IA - The Northern Iowa Panthers women's soccer team faced off against the University of Nebraska-Omaha in their home opening match. The Mavericks came into the game with the same 1-3 record as the Panthers.

The Panthers struck first, scoring in the 5th minute when senior forward Claire Clark hit a crossing pass that was put away by sophomore forward Larin Gordon. 

Warm temperatures had both coaches using plenty of substitutions to keep players fresh. Nebraska-Omaha utilized 9 bench players, while the Panthers used 5. 

The second period is when the Mavericks would even the score. In the 83rd minute Nebraska-Omaha's Sarah Nordstrom hit a crossing pass to teammate Melanie McCormick who headed the ball in net. Nebraska-Omaha would score again in two minutes later in the 85th minute when a deflected cross was put back by Maverick Senior Monica Bosiljevac.

The Panthers were outshot 7 to 9 for the match. Nebraska-Omaha kicked 6 corners to the Panthers 4.

Senior Panthers Goalkeeper Nicole Postel recorded 4 saves and 2 goals against in her losing effort. Nebraska-Omaha sophomore goalkeeper Meaghan Clark  had 4 saves to go along with her win.

The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, September 8th at 1p.m. The Western Illinois Leathernecks travel to Cedar Falls for their second match of the season against UNI. The Panthers lost to WIU 2-1 at the Green Bay Tournament.
