Panthers Frustrated By Badgers, Fall 1-0

October 21, 2015

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team continues to dominate the stat sheet, but suffered a frustrating 1-0 loss to the University of Wisconsin Wednesday night at Engelmann Stadium.

The Panthers (3-9-2) outshot the Badgers (4-9-2) by nearly double at 18-to-10 on the night, only to see Wisconsin convert a turnover into the only goal of the contest a few minutes into the second half.

"That's been the situation for a good number of games," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "The team came out and they fought hard and they worked extremely hard and I have gotten that from them the entire season. Defensively, we are missing three starters because of injury, but defensively we were very good. Our possession was good and I was very pleased with the guys in the midfield. At the end of the day, we are not good enough in front of the attacking goal. Tonight it wasn't good enough."

Milwaukee looked to be the first on the scoreboard in the 11th minute. Freshman Francesco Saporito had a pair of cracks at it following a 20-yard free kick, only to see both get blocked by the UW defense.

Saporito sent a nice feed to freshman Peter Raymonds in the 33rd minute, but a nice save made by Adrian Remeniuk at the post kept it 0-0.

It was Milwaukee again just after intermission. Freshman Tinashe Marowa was turned away on a quality stop on a break in the 50th minute. His volley on the proceeding corner kick went just high as well.

The Badgers took advantage of a turnover to net the only goal of the night, with Mike Catalano regaining possession at the top of the penalty area and slotting home the eventual winner just inside the left post at the 51:02 mark.

"It was a shot from distance that didn't seem like it was shot very hard," Kelderman said. "But they got an opportunity and buried it and that is something we just can't seem to do right now."

Raymonds sent a blast just high in the 61st minute and sophomore Reid Stevenson was turned away at the post in the 73rd, keeping UWM off the scoreboard on the night.

Senior Agustin Rey was credited with a pair of saves on the night, including an impressive stop on a point-blank header in the 79th minute that kept it a one goal affair.

For the game, each team had three shots on target, with UWM holding that 18-10 advantage overall. Raymonds and Saporito paced the night with five shots each.

Up next, Milwaukee returns to Horizon League play with a matchup at Cleveland State Saturday. Game time is set for 12 p.m. CST.
