Panthers Ground Cardinals in 2OT; Move into Tie for First

October 11, 2011
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Playing on the road and without its everyday goalkeeper, Ohio Dominican''s men''s soccer team showed its mettle Sunday afternoon at Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) as the Panthers rallied with a 2-1 overtime victory to move into a tie with Northwood (Mich.) atop the GLIAC standings. With his team-leading seventh score and second overtime game-winner from 40 yards out at the 113:55 mark, junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) and the Panthers got revenge for last Tuesday''s stunning 4-3 home overtime loss, improving to 4-2-2 in the conference and 5-4-2 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 4-2-1 in the GLIAC and 8-2-2 overall. With starting sophomore goalie Dean Dziewit (Waterford, MI) sidelined due to injury, freshman defender Austin Dent (Pataskala, OH) stepped in on emergency duty for his first action between the pipes this year and performed more than admirably, recording six saves and allowing just the early score. Similar to the last meeting, SVSU opened the game''s scoring as Craig Neal passed the ball ahead to Morley Burns who put it home from the corner of the goal box, 15:03 into the contest. Undeterred, ODU answered just over two minutes later as junior Thomas Senessie (Westerville, OH) beat the keeper with a close range shot off a pass into the penalty box by sophomore Duncan Campbell (Hilliard, OH) for his season''s first goal. Despite a 13-6 disadvantage on shots in the second half and overtime periods, the Panthers kept their composure to pick up just their second win in a record seven overtime outings. ODU closes its three-game road stretch at 4:30 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 13 as it takes on Tiffin in the series finale. Contact: Bryan Desch deschb@ohiodominican.edu
