Panthers Turn Back Saint Vincent in Women's Soccer

September 12, 2011

Emma Roosa scored the game-winning goal just minutes into the second half to lift the Pitt-Bradford women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Saint Vincent Friday afternoon.

The visiting Bearcats opened the scoring midway through the first half after Pitt-Bradford goalie Alisa Cornell was unable to control Abbey Neish’s crossing pass. Elyse Togliatti was there to collect the rebound and scored in the near corner. It was the first goal allowed by the Panthers this season and came after Pitt-Bradford had controlled most of the possession through the first 20 minutes.

Pitt-Bradford would draw even moments later when Alex Snellbaker connected with Stephannie Gaudette on a long pass near the top of the box. Gaudette would then dribble around a defender and fire a shot inside the near post for the equalizer. It was the first goal of her career.

Tied at one early in the second half, Pitt-Bradford took advantage of its only corner kick. Saint Vincent goalkeeper Kirstie Mills misjudged Yvonne Rohan’s pass in and Roosa was there for the easy chip-in, her second tally of the season.

Cornell would make a pair of saves over the final 38 minutes and the defense would help preserve the lead to keep the Panthers undefeated on the season.

“I think we showed some fatigue early in the game,” said head coach Mike Idland. “That was the first time we had to deal with being down a goal so I thought we showed some good character with that, to grind it out and work our way back into the game.”

Cornell finished with three saves and Pitt-Bradford outshot the Bearcats 16-11 on the afternoon.

“Overall, I think we are on the right track,” said Idland. “The win is good for our confidence but our motto is ‘get back to work’ and that’s what we have to do.”

The Panthers (4-0) will host Elmira Saturday at 3 p.m.
