Paris’ Overtime Goal Lifts Bulldogs Past Penn

October 22, 2011
PHILADELPHIA – It seems whenever the Yale men’s soccer team has needed a big goal this season, one of the seniors has stepped up and delivered. Saturday, it was Charlie Paris. Paris scored 4 minutes, 37 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the Bulldogs to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Quakers at Rhodes Field. Paris’ game-winner came when he settled a short pass from Chris Dennen, took one touch and fired a shot past Penn goalkeeper Max Kurtzman. Five of Yale’s game-winning goals this season have come from seniors. It was the second for Paris, who also did it in the win over Dartmouth. “It’s really pleasing to me to see our seniors stepping up at critical times, especially in Ivy League games,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. With the win, the Bulldogs moved into sole possession of second place. Brown and Cornell played a 1-1 tie earlier Saturday, so Yale trails first-place Cornell by one point. The Bulldogs (7-5-2, 3-1 Ivy) had played their first three Ivy games at home. “This was a really good road performance against a good team,” Tompkins said. “Penn attacks more quickly than any other team in the league, and we really weathered the storm, especially early in the game.” The Quakers (6-6-2, 1-3 Ivy) had a 10-5 edge in shots in the first half, but Yale goalkeeper Bobby Thalman made three saves, and the game was scoreless at the intermission. Yale grabbed the lead at 56:18 and again it was a pair of seniors that accounted for the goal. Marcus DiLallo sent a long ball forward to Dennen, who controlled the bouncing ball and fired a shot into the right side of the goal. Penn, though, tied it with 7:51 left in the second half when Christian Barreiro curled a free kick into the lower right corner from just outside the box. Yale had the first two shots of the first overtime but couldn’t capitalize. Paris’s goal came on the Bulldogs’ second shot of the second extra period. The Quakers outshot Yale 24-16 in the game. Thalman finished with eight saves to earn the victory. “It was an exciting and bitterly contested game,” Tompkins said. “Both teams really went for it and played with great spirit and conviction.” The Bulldogs are back on the road next Saturday. They travel to New York City to meet Columbia. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
