August 30, 2015

FLORENCE, SC – UNC Asheville tallied a pair of second-half goals and went on to capture a 3-0 win over  Francis Marion University 3-0, Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30) in non-conference women’s soccer action.

The match included a 45-minute lightning delay early in the second half.

Francis Marion (1-3-0) will play at Georgia Southern University on Friday at 7 p.m.  The Patriots will return home to face Stetson University on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. on Hartzler Field.

Patriot senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry, the second leading active saves leader in NCAA Division I, registered eight stops on Sunday. She now has 324 career saves.  The Jacksonville, Fla., native also equaled the school record for matches played in goal with her appearance on Sunday – her 56th career match tying Amanda Liles.

UNCA goalkeeper Madeline Getz made one save en route to the shutout.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead at the 32:02 mark when sophomore Bethany Spano tapped in a rebound of another UNCA attempt.  The sequence began with Courtney Naber firing a shot from the left side and O’Berry making a save, but the ball landed at the feet of Spano, who tallied her first score of 2015.

Following the weather delay, UNCA received goals from Justine James in the 56th minute and Kyra Kandel in the 78th minute.

FMU junior Kelly Anthony had a free kick in the 18th minute that sailed high over the crossbar and junior Tori Whigham’s attempt was stopped by Getz in the 48th minute.

UNCA outshot the Patriots 19-2 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
