Patriots boot Knights 7-0

October 17, 2011

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Chanel Harris and junior Kelly Kady both scored twice to help lead Francis Marion University to a 7-0 victory over visiting St. Andrews University, Monday afternoon (Oct. 17) in women’s soccer action.

Francis Marion snaps a seven-match skid and in the process improves to 4-10-1 and surpasses the team’s win total of 2010.  The Division II Knights fall to 1-13-0.

FMU will travel to Orangeburg on Thursday evening for a 7 p.m. match-up with South Carolina State University.

The Patriots outshot St. Andrews 38-1 and led 15-0 in corner kicks.  The shot total was five shy of the school record, while the corner kicks were two shy of the FMU mark.  The goal total was the highest for the Patriots in 50 contests dating back to the next-to-last match of the 2008 campaign.

Harris gave the Patriots a 1-0 advantage at the 13:14 mark when she took a feed from Yasmin Bunter and scored on a 10-yard shot from the left side.  It was the Canadian’s first collegiate goal.  Kady doubled the margin in the 23rd minute as a long service from Jordan Allen found her all alone on the right side and she beat Knight goalkeeper Hannah Platt with an 8-yard shot.

Five minutes into the second half, Harris scored her second tally as she dribbled in from a right-side angle and scored on a 9-yard shot.  Bunter upped the margin to 4-0 at 58:33 when she received a through ball from Erin Breen and scored on a straight-away 11-yard attempt.

Only 1:06 later at 59:39, Breen put FMU ahead 5-0 as she connected on a direct kick from 20-yards out.

Kady registered her second score at 67:51 as she tapped in a loose ball that landed at her feet only two yards in front of an open goal.  Freshman defender Lauren Soper completed the scoring as she tallied her first career goal with 37 seconds remaining.  Freshman Elizabeth Asare crossed the ball to the middle of the 18-yard box and Soper delivered a 10-yard scoring strike.

FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock did not have to record a save en route to her sixth career shutout.  Platt registered 16 saves.

St. Andrews’ lone scoring opportunity came in the 84th minute when Olivia Taylor found Gaberille Jaramillo with a through ball, but Jaramillo pushed her shot just outside the right post.
