Published: October 26, 2017

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University ended its 2017 season with a 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of Flagler University as the Saints’ Oscar Davidsson scored the golden goal 2:23 into the extra session, Wednesday evening (Oct. 25) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.

Francis Marion ends its campaign with a 6-9-0 overall record, while the Saints improve to 4-8-1.

The lone score for the Patriots was by junior Levin Sandmann as he gathered the ball at the top of the 18-yard box off of a Damien Tergella cross and found the back of the net putting FMU up 1-0 at the 24:52 mark. Sandmann finished the campaign with a team-best 10 goals.  He has now reached double figures for goals in each of his first three seasons and has 33 for his career.

Davidsson tied the game at 1-1 thirteen minutes into the second half, with 58:09 on the clock, with his third goal of the season. The Patriots did have two attempts to register a winning score, but Tergella in the 71st minute and Max Lindquist in the 74th minute both missed the target.

Flagler’s first chance in overtime was set up by junior Quam Salami, as he put a perfectly placed ball into the penalty box where Davidsson slid it into the goal in the 93rd minute.

FMU freshman goalie Raul Guillamon Bejar recorded seven saves in the match, four of which in the last 20 minutes of regulation. Freshman goalkeeper Iwan Roberts collected two saves for Flagler.  The Patriots played a man down for the final 15:10 as a defender received two yellow cards.

Francis Marion led with three corner kicks to Flagler’s one, while the Saints outshot the Patriots 13-8.
