Patriots hold off Trojans for 2-1 win
FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman Joergen Tesdal and junior Cody Farrier scored goals and Francis Marion University withstood a furious Anderson University rally in the final two minutes to claim a 2-1 non-conference win, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 24) in men’s soccer action.
The Patriots improve to 5-8-2 with their second straight win, while Anderson drops to 3-10-3. Francis Marion will conclude its regular-season schedule at home with a Senior Night contest against ninth-ranked Lander University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Tesdal opened the scoring in the 26th minute when he took a pass from junior Henrique Guitti and found the back of the net with a 13-yard shot from the right side of the penalty area.
Freshman Robin Schittenhelm nearly doubled the FMU lead in the 34th minute, but his 20-yard blast from the right side was fended off by a leaping save from Anderson goalkeeper Lukas Hesse.
The Patriots maintained the one-goal advantage until the 60:43 mark when Farrier and junior defender Simon Nett combined on one of the prettier goals of 2012. Nett gained possession in FMU’s own defensive end and dribbled 40-yards up the right sideline before crossing the ball to Farrier who one-touched it into the Anderson goal from 15 yards out.
Anderson ended the Patriots’ bid for a shutout with 3:36 remaining as Will Treichler fed Mattias Schyberg for a 12-yard scoring shot. Two minutes later, the Trojans again raced into the penalty area and got off three shots in a span of 10 seconds, prompting two point-blank diving saves by Patriot goalkeeper Logan Fisher and a third save by a Patriot defender.
Fisher finished the match with four saves, while Hesse also made four stops.
Fisher made a key decision in the opening stanza when he came racing off his line to deny Felix Helgesson a 20-yard attempt after the Trojans midfielder had gotten behind the Patriot backline.
Although Anderson outshot the Patriots 16-9, both teams had six shots on goal. The Trojans also led in corner kicks 9-2.
Under the direction of first-year head coach John Campbell, Francis Marion has exceeded its win total for the entire 2011 season.
