Patriots & Hurricanes play even on the pitch

October 26, 2013

AMERICUS, GA – Despite amassing its highest shot total in more than a decade, Francis Marion University could not get one in the net and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday afternoon (Oct.  26) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.

Francis Marion, now 8-2-4 overall, maintains its possession of third place in the PBC with a 5-2-1 league mark.  The Patriots play at Anderson University on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., before closing out their regular season at Lander University on Saturday at 2 p.m.

FMU outshot the Hurricanes 33-11 and the Patriots earned all 12 corner kicks that the match offered.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Nate Stover posted his sixth complete-match shutout of the year by registering five saves.  Despite missing a match last Saturday with an injury, the Titusville, Fla., native has now extended his scoreless minutes-in-goal streak to 221:20.

GSW’s Joe Cullip posted eight saves before he was red-carded in the 102nd minute.  His replacement Ryan Tucker made one stop in the final eight minutes.

Freshman Shahin Hemat led FMU with 10 shots, while three other Patriots had four shots apiece.

Francis Marion struck for 19 shots in the first half, six of which were on frame.  The Patriots produced one shot on goal in each of the overtime periods.

Three of Francis Marion’s four ties this season have been by a 0-0 score.  In its previous 37 seasons of playing soccer, FMU had played to only six scoreless draws.
