PHILADELPHIA – In about as even game as Penn has played this season, the Quakers were not able to overcome a late first-half goal from Columbia in a 1-0 loss to the Lions at Rhodes Field.

The two teams were equal in shots, each side mustering 12 apiece, but it was Jack Gagne’s goal in the 38^th minute which provided the difference. Gagne was in the right place at the right time, positioning himself at the near right post to cleanly field the rebound of an Antonio Mattarazzo shot and put it in the open net.

The Quakers had the better of the chances in the second half, sending five shots to goal. Each was saved by Kyle Jackson, Penn’s best chance coming off a Travis Cantrell offering from inside 10 yards in the 80^th minute. Cantrell located a bounding ball, and connected cleanly in mid-air, but Jackson jumped just in front of it to deny Penn the equalizer. Cantrell had another chance to tie the match in the 90^th minute, but again was denied by Jackson. The Red and Blue had one final chance to find the tying marker on a corner with 9.5 seconds to play, but the service did not find a Penn foot or head and time ran out.

Baker finished with five total shots in the game, and was one of four Penn players with two shots on goal. Duke Lacroix had two shots on goal in the first half, including Penn’s finest true opportunity to score in the match, a laser which missed finding space under the crossbar only because Jackson got fingertips on it.

The Quakers are now 2-9-0 this season, and will again hit the road next weekend for a match at Dartmouth on Oct. 13 at 4:30 p.m.
