PHILADELPHIA - As is normally the case when Penn is playing in men's soccer this season, goals came early and often in Saturday's match against Dartmouth. Unfortunately for the Quakers, two goals were allowed to just one goal for. Neither team was able to change the state of the game in the second half, with Penn dropping a 2-1 decision to the Big Green.

Christian Barreiro had the goal for Penn, scoring in the 20th minute for his sixth goal of the season. That score tied the match after Maarten van Ess scored on a header in the 14th minute.

The match was not tied for long, as Dartmouth’s go-to scorer came through on a penalty just 1:38 after Barreiro tied the match. Lucky Mkosana took the PK for Dartmouth after Penn was whistled for a foul in the box while trying to establish position on a Dartmouth throw in. The Quakers were deemed too aggressive on their defense and Mkosana made them pay with his eighth goal of the season.

Despite an 8-5 edge in shots in the second half - and a 14-12 advantage overall - Penn could not tie the match over the final 60 minutes of play. Penn had two legitimate chances to tie the match in the second half, the first coming in the 54th minute when Duke Lacroix came in down the left flank and took a point-blank shot that Noah Cohen got his hands on. The rebound came to Barreiro who was inches wide in his look for a second goal.

In the 90th minute, Penn earned a corner kick to give the Quakers a prime chance to tie. Barreiro's service found the head of Austin Kinn, but the subsequent header was just high and time ultimately ran out.

Dartmouth opened the scoring on van Ess' header off a corner service from Kevin Dzierzawski. The ball came in to the 6'4 van Ess who beat Penn's defense to the service and headed it in on the far side.

The Red and Blue countered with a well-earned goal from Barreiro five and a half minutes later. The Quakers carried the play after the allowed goal, with a header from Travis Cantrell going slightly wide just before Barreiro's goal. The score came off a corner, with Jonny Dolezal gathering a loose ball just inside the 18 after Penn won the second chance following the corner. Dolezal smartly made the extra pass, finding the foot of Barreiro who one-touched it to the low left corner for his sixth of the season.

With his goal, Barreiro has a team-high 16 points and is one off from his career high. In addition, Barreiro racked up his 53rd career point with the goal moving one behind Tom Lieberman on Penn's all-time scoring list.

The Quakers fall to 6-5-2 overall and are 1-2-0 in the Ivy League. Penn is sixth in a tightly-bunched Ivy League, three points behind four clubs in second with six points and six points behind Ancient Eight-leader Cornell which has nine points. Penn has a chance to make up ground on the group ahead when Yale comes to Rhodes Field next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
